As I reached for the sugar bowl to find it empty I must have sighed out loud as my husband of thirty three years asked me what was wrong to which I replied nothing. It wasn't a lie but simply a refusal to go down a road I had been down so many times before. I pondered on the memory of all the times I go to the bathroom and the last piece of toilet paper has been used but the refill was not replaced even though the cupboard overflows with the stuff. The same cupboard for years not a different one every week. When the house was full of children it was simply a case of "I didn't do it" and the culprit was never brought to bear, but now there is just the two of us. Recently while away I lost one of my pearl earrings in the Hotel room and became so upset but my husband didn't seem upset at all. The next day when we returned to the room he kissed me on the nose and held in front of me my earring, I was so happy, but even more happy to learn he spent two hours on his knees looking for it. So I dont mind refilling the sugar bowl or anything else as it really is the little things that mean a lot, especially after thirty three years. |
