Love is a force more formidable than any other. It is invisible, it cannot be seen or measured, yet it is powerful enough to transform you in a moment, and offer you more joy than any material possession could. - Barbara DeAngelis

A New Day – Aisling, Dublin

In the Helix in Dublin recently City Arts and the Ballymun Music Programme put together a collaboration with a choir of 150 children and an orchestra of 60. The children performed a suite of music called a New Day which was written specially for the children to perform by Dublin composer Daragh O’ Toole. They were conducted by David Brophy and joined by members of the two RTE concert orchestras and Cór na nÓg.

One of the lines I loved was “I want to stand tall like the towers with all their strength and power”. These children don’t have their own instruments to practice on and they played like professionals, which was amazing considering they only get to practice at the centre. It was a really inspirational evening and at the end someone involved said if one of these kids goes to bed tonight dreaming a big dream of who they can be and what they can do, I’ll be so happy. The thing is they didn’t have to dream, they were already onstage holding their own alongside some of the most talented musicians in the country; they were already doing something special and it was a magical evening and a few days later they played again for the President of Ireland and Archbishop Desmond Tutu who said they were fabulous :-)
